Getting Ready for Class Tonight

In order to get ready for class tonight, you'll want to read through the book of John and find the 7 statements Jesus uses that begin with "I am..."

You'll want to read John 6, beginning in verse 13 and going through the end of the chapter.

You'll want to read John 8.

There's two in John 10.

Another in John 11.

One in John 14.

And, lastly, one in John 15.

Just scan around a bit and find them...maybe get the context of the passage, too, to figure out why Jesus was using these terms to describe Himself.

And you might want to think about each one of these metaphors and how they might describe what Jesus means to us, individually, in 2006...

...and, we'll be using a scene from Disney's "Aladdin" to get our brains engaged, too!

See you in class. And, if you can, why not plan to stick around after baptisms tonight (which are after the 4th service, and should last about half an hour)?

Deck Building Help Needed For Saturday!!!!

Hi Everybody!

The posts have set and we’re ready to begin SERIOUS deck-building this weekend for our addition to Roads Coffee House here at the church!

So, if you can be available on Saturday, January 28, 2006 any amount of time between 8:30AM and early afternoon (say 2PM), please…

1) E-mail Steve at Steve.Davis@Crossroadsbible.org and tell him you’re coming & how long you intend to be here. We can use everybody who wants to come!

2) Let him know if you can bring any & all of the following: Hammer, pick axe & charged cordless power drill (we’ll need a BUNCH of those).

Thanks so much for being willing to serve this outreach portion of our ministry…and we’re planning on working rain or shine! Of course, if it gets too bad, we’ll reschedule, but we’d be more likely to take a break and wait a few minutes…so dress weather-appropriate

What did you learn in Sunday School yesterday?

How was worship? The "order" we did things? Any suggestions on the teaching or that other stuff we should know about?

And, you know, you can comment anonymously, too, right?

Getting Ready For Class Tonight

We'll be continuing our series that runs alongside the "Quest" sermon series going on in big church this week.

You might find it helpful to read over Isaiah 49: 6 & John 8: 12 and see what they might have in common.

You'll want to read over Matthew 5: 13--16, and see if you can find a cause & effect. You know...find the effect Jesus wants us to have and then what "causes" that to happen.

Finally, you'll want to read over Ephesians 4: 1--6. Find the list in verses 2 & 3 of the characteristics of a worthy walk as well as look for the "ingredients that make for unity in verses 4 & 5.

We'll also be viewing a scene from the movie "The First Knight" to sort of highlight the title of the lesson: "Being True To Who You Are."

Don't Forget...

True Love Waits starts today...week #1 of 3, and you'll need to attend with your parents. Preferably both, but one'll be okay, too. Just bring your Bible at 10:45AM to the Dungeon.

True Love Waits

Simply a reminder for parents and teens:

This Sunday begins our 3-week series studying True Love Waits. For those of you unfamiliar with that program, it's a look at sexuality from a biblical perspective and how that affects teenagers.

There's no need to sign up, but if you could e-mail me at brent@crossroadsbible.org and let me know if you're attending it would be most helpful in ensuring we have enough supplies.

The class meets at 10:45AM in the student ministry Dungeon at CBC. Hope to see you there!

Pine Cove No Agenda Rules Sheet

For those of you who haven't read through them, here they are. We'll have some extras for you to sign when you get to CBC tonight:

Crossroads Bible Church Student Ministry
Pine Cove “No Agenda” Retreat, January 13--15, 2006.
Rules for a positive camping experience and a happy life.

Hey, just because there is no agenda, that does NOT mean that there aren’t any rules! As promised, the only two things on our schedule is an optional meeting to pray/worship/share what you’re learning after dinner on Sunday night and a bonfire on Saturday night.

1. I will be a bus rider who is full of happy-happy joy-joy. I will obey the bus driver, watch the safety video as if it were Star Wars and then obey the words on the tape. I will repeat the phrase, “safety is everybody’s business” as if it were a mantra at those times when I feel like going buck wild while in transit. If you’re riding the van, you will obey Brent’s commands as if Moses were speaking.
2. I will be responsible for my own luggage and belongings. I understand that if my stuff doesn’t get on the bus or to my cabin, then I could possibly have to wear Jude Miniat’s muddy football clothes for the rest of the weekend. This includes underwear.
3. I will serve others when we arrive by keeping in mind that I might not get to room with my VBFF’s and I will work hard at making shiny, happy compromises. In fact, I will literally bend over backwards to serve others and make new friends. There will be 8 beds or so in each room, and it is expected at AT LEAST one adult will be in each room. There are always “math” issues with this, and I will be a terribly happy and joyful person solving these math problems.
4. I fully understand that rest is one of the goals of the retreat. Therefore, I will be in my cabin at midnight each night, and lights out at 1AM. NO EXCEPTIONS—Rachel Forrest, this means you and anyone else set on staying up. Lights out shall be defined as the lights off, no talking, laughing, breathing loudly through your nose or audible gaseous emissions. If I’m not sleepy, I’ll stare at the bunk above me and wonder, “if I had powdered water, what would I add?”
5. I will NOT walk alone in the woods at any time. We will notify an adult before exploring and pioneering, and I will not consider wild animals part of my fee for “wildlife fun” and try to pet and/or capture them. All females will call Maria MacGilvra to beat the fire out of any wildlife fun that makes it’s way into the cabins…In fact, all the males will call Maria, too. No, Melissa Rooklidge, guys are NOT wildlife fun.
6. Pine Cove has rules regarding practical jokes and we could lose our deposit. In addition to these rules, practical jokes may cause a mess, humiliate someone, damage personal or camp property, or make clothes or bedding soggy. If you have any doubt as to whether or not to do a joke, DON’T. Also, let sleeping people sleep (sleep is NOT a weakness) and be considerate of all nappers. If you wake someone up, Bethany Hayes will be called on to beat the fire out of you…unless she’s sleeping, in which case we call Samantha Maggs.
7. All meals are MANDATORY so we can make sure you’re alive. NO EXCEPTIONS.
8. I will obey all Pine Cove Staff. No, Alex Ehrich, obedience is NOT Greek for “flirt with.” I will also obey the CBC adults who are here to serve me. If I need to tell you not to flirt with the CBC adults, you more likely need to have your head examined this weekend rather than resting.
9. I will take care of and put up all the Pine Cove equipment I use. This includes putting it up in the correct places as well as immediately after using it. I will treat their stuff better than I treat my own stuff, because if we wreck their stuff, the following groups can’t use their stuff, so I’ll take care of all the stuff and make sure the stuff is well cared for stuff.
10. No PDA at all, for any reason. Anyone who breaks this rule will have to call home and have their parents come get them after Kaylah Russell and/or Angela Brannen beats the fire out of both of you. PLUS…Brent will make fun of you for your poor choices in who you choose to put your lips on.
11. All personal CD players are NOT community property, nor are their CD’s. Please ask for permission for borrowing ANYTHING of anyone else’s. Please use discretion as to the amount of time you spend listening to music alone…headphones don’t make friends.
12. It is hoped that you will keep cell phone usage to the absolute minimum. This includes text messaging and if you’re on the phone, anyone at anytime can pepper you with whatever questions they want to and there’s not one fat thing you can do about it except get happy and get off the phone. Any person calling their boyfriend/girlfriend who isn’t here to “say goodnight” will be brought to Brent’s attention and ridiculed before, during, and after meals.
13. I realize that anything NOT mentioned here falls under the category of WWJD? If I don’t know what Jesus would do, I will ask someone. I will then double check that answer with an adult.

Getting Ready for "Quest"

As many of you know, tomorrow our our church begins an 8-week sermon series entitled "Quest for Reality." So, I'm hoping that all our students will do everything possible to make it to both the regular church services as well as Sunday School (if you gotta make a choice, get to "big church")...I think the series will be helpful no matter where you are in your relationship with Christ.

And, the best way to prepare is to take some time to get away from the noise and busyness of life for a few minutes and ask yourself the following question:

"Why am I here?"

If you want to go further...how does my answer to that question affect the way I live now?

See you at church and/or Sunday School!

Ladies Night, Part II

I know some of you high school girls missed out on the annual "letters" meeting and wanted to let you know if you couldn't make that traditional time of getting to know the other girls NOT in your small group...

...tonight you have another chance!

Tonight, January 6, from 7PM tonight until 10AM tomorrow morning, all the girls small groups are having a sleepover in the Dungeon at CBC. You don't have to bring anything in particular, but if you have a snack you like you can bring that to share. There will be pizza ordered and if you could pay $2 for that and the soft drinks it would be helpful...

and, it would be MOST HELPFUL if you could e-mail Kristy Brown (who's heading it up) at kristy@crossroadsbible.org and let her know you're coming.

Hope you ladies can make it...and guys, no loitering!
